Supporting our youth
Real talk.
This week I had an opportunity to spend some time with the absolutely incredible team at JCP Youth Tasmania headed up by the equally amazing Will Smith
But.. It was not what I expected.
To say that I was moved by what the JCP team are doing would be a complete & utter understatement.
Here is why.
I grew in fear, carnage, destruction & uncertainty & armed with these experiences I thought meeting ‘Tasmania’s at risk youth’ would be a walk I. The park.
It wasn’t.
This week I was I introduced to young men that are at such a high level of risk to not only the community but themselves, it was shocking.
Over the visit I became so incredibly emotional about what I was exposed to because I could simply see myself in these young men.
In the young men I met, I literally saw myself. Same facial features, physical structure, manurisms & attitude.
They had a similar family violence dynamic as I did at there age. They are, (like I did) experiencing hell.
The safest part of all of this is that the ting men are so completely defeated in there hearts, minds & bodies. They are depleted of all good energy & vitality.
Just like I was at that age.
My message to the young men was simple. You can have anything, do anything & be anything that you want to be.
I am living proof.
The most devastating this is, like I said at the start is that the statistics are showing the odds are stacked against them.
However & I stress this. The only thing between the young men I met & their incarceration or death.. Is JCP Youth. An organisation running on fumes.
Why am I writing this? To shed some light where it’s so desperately needed.
& here is some advice. PLEASE of you aren’t already. REACH OUT to a young person who is deemed ‘at risk’ in your family or community & offer some guidance & support.
Because statics & my experience also shows that young people are more likely to be at risk or offend they do not supported & lack guidance🙏🏼
